2009 O’Neill Cold Water Classic Series to hit Tofino

Pacific Surf Co. is excited to announce that O’Neill has added 3 new stops for the 2009 series on its famed Cold Water Classic Series; ‘The Most Northern, The Most Southern, The Wildest, The Coldest & The Most Classic Surf Contests On The Planet’. The event already consists of two stops, the Highland Cup in Scotland at Thurso East and Brims Ness and the iconic CWC stop at Santa Cruz, Northern California’s premier ASP event since 1987. The new stops include Tasmania, South Africa and Canada.

From October 27th to November 2nd, 2009 all eyes in the international surfing community will be focused on Tofino, BC, as this 6-star WQS event takes place on the rugged West Coast of Vancouver Island. This is the first ever ASP event to be held on Canadian soil. The local surf community is buzzing as Canadians will have the opportunity to witness some of the most spectacular surfing to grace these waters, other than our local born and raised contingent of pro surfers. The exact beach location and participants are yet to be determined.  Upwards of 150 professional surfers could potentially show up, as they will be competing for the $50,000 cash bonus prize for the Champion of the 2009 CWC series, who will be crowned at the final stop in Santa Cruz and gain valuable points in order to qualify for the 2010 WCT tour.

ASP International CEO, Brodie Carr, as well as many others, believe the introduction of the Cold Water Classic Series to Tasmania, South Africa and Canada will have a significant and positive impact on the WQS; "The O’Neill Cold Water Classic Series represents an exciting and unique addition to the ASP World Tour Calendar. The established events of Scotland and Santa Cruz are already hugely popular with the surfers and the addition of the high rated events in Canada, Tasmania and South Africa really broadens and supports not only this series, but the WQS as a whole."

This event will no doubt put Canada on the map of the international surfing community and legitimize the fact that there is quality surf and surfers in Canada.

More information about the Series will be released in the near future but for now check out www.coldwaterclassic.net/

CANADA Competes at I.S.A. World Surfing Games

Pacific Surf School (PSS) would like to congratulate O’Neill and Adanac Surfers Union (ASU) Team Riders and local boys Noah Cohen and “Radical” Reid Jackson for gaining 22nd overall for Canada, out of 31 teams, at this years ISA (International Surfing Association) World Surfing Games held in Costa de Caparica, Portugal, this past October.  There are currently 57 nations in the ISA membership and this is the highest Canada has ever placed.

Noah walked into the competition ranked 91st overall and walked out 49th in the world, cracking the top 50. While Radical Reid was ranked 92nd and came home ranked 65th overall. Both Noah and Reid’s surfing have reached new heights and the on lookers got glimpses of this and Canada's progression on the world stage. In particular, Noah was throwing down some air reverses to finish off his combos and was pictured slotted on www.Surfline.com, the most prominent surfing website out there.  As Marc Fuller, from O’Neill Canada, said in Portugal, the feeling is Canada can and should be in the mid teens at the next games. To help secure this goal for the future, Shannon Brown has been appointed the coach for the two Team Canada teams by the President of the Canadian Surfing Association, John Fluke. The next ISA event will be the Quiksilver World Jrs. at the end of March 2009 and the Billabong ISA World Surfing Games at the end of July 2009.

Pacific Surf School to host The TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup at Cox Bay

The TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup is one of the largest conservation initiatives of the Vancouver Aquarium.  What started 15 years ago as a small beach cleanup by four Vancouver Aquarium employees has now grown into the second largest cleanup in the world.

Powered by Canadians, this program allows people from all regions and all walks of life to make a positive difference to their environment. Last year alone, over 52,000 Canadians registered to clean up 1,240 shorelines removing 87,489 kg of harmful shoreline litter.

Pacific Surf School is proud to be hosting a cleanup on Thursday September 25 2008 at Cox Bay. We would like to invite everyone to come along and help with this great initiative. Participants are required to meet at the Maltby Road Cox Bay car park @ 4:30pm. After a quick briefing and equipment handout (garbage bags and plastic gloves), the cleanup is scheduled to start at 5:00pm. Following the event there will be a Beach BBQ will all proceeds going to the Surfrider Foundation Canada. So come on out, bring the kids and help keep our beaches clean!

SURFING TOFINO IN THE WINTER...........

O.K. the word’s out, it’s no secret any more that the waves here in Tofino (and everywhere else in the Northern Hemisphere) get much “better” in the fall and winter months; but what does “better” really mean?

This term ‘better’ (when talking about surfing in the winter) is primarily used by the experienced surfer who has spent all summer riding the smaller (South) swell waves and is now looking forward to the much larger and more powerful winter (North) swells. ‘Better’ is also used to describe the quality of the waves; during these months large storms are generated North of here, up near the Alaskan ‘Pan Handle’, these storms consistently produce large North West swells that do not have to travel far before hitting our beaches here in Tofino. Because these waves do not have to travel as far as the summer south swells they are still carrying a lot of their original energy and size. The quality of these waves is also affected by our prevailing South East wind during these months. A South East wind is what we call on “offshore” wind; this wind blows from the beach towards the wave, physically preventing it from breaking until it reaches shallower water, where it will break more dramatically, often with a hollow section that is commonly called the “tube”. This offshore wind also ‘cleans up’ the swell (waves) by grooming the face of the wave and eliminating some of the surface ‘chop’ and bumps from the wave.

So where does this leave the novice to intermediate surfer? Is the fall and winter a good season to plan a surf trip? Well here goes, there are many advantages to planning a surf trip in the fall and winter:

  • You will find cheaper accommodations in the town of Tofino,
  • You will find the water and waves much less crowded,
  • Contrary to popular belief, the water isn’t actually that cold (the water temp’ only fluctuates by approximately 6°C year round),
  • If you are planning to take surfing lessons, the group sizes are much smaller, thus ensuring more personal tuition,
  • If you are planning on renting equipment, there is much more choice available to you.

But what about the waves themselves, is it safe to surf here in the winter if you are a novice to intermediate surfer? Well, the waves are consistently larger and more powerful through the fall and winter months, but do not let this discourage you. Here in Tofino we have six surfing beaches within 30mins of town; all of these beaches have slightly different orientation, this means that if there are large powerful waves hitting one beach, you just need to drive around the corner to the next beach (that faces a slightly different direction) and you may find much smaller, less powerful waves. So even when it is ‘overhead’ at Long Beach or North Chestermans, you may find a nice clean ‘waist-high’ wave at South Chestermans or Mackenzie Beach.

If you do plan on visiting Tofino for a surf trip during the winter and fall months and you do consider yourself to be a novice to intermediate surfer here are some words of wisdom:

  • ALWAYS seek advice about where to surf from a respectable surf shop or rental company, such as Storm or Pacific Surf School.
  • When asked what your ability level is – BE HONEST.
  • Be aware of your ability and do not tackle waves larger than you are used to – it is not easier to ride bigger waves!
  • If in doubt take a lesson. In a lesson you will be guided to the safest beach for the day and receive professional tuition with a certified lifesaver.
